Good news for first time buyers in the recent budget!

The Chancellor made a number of statements aimed at keeping the housing market moving, possibly the most important of which was the abolishment of stamp duty land tax (SDLT) for first time buyers.

As of 22nd November 2017, SDLT is no longer payable on the first £300,000 up to £500,000 when purchasing property or land in England and Wales (till the end of March). SDLT is however unchanged on property purchases over £500,000.00.

SDLT Stamp duty land tax is the tax paid to the government by the purchaser when buying property of land within the UK.

This change to the regulations means that for many first-time buyers the stamp duty will either be nil, or greatly reduced.

To be eligible the purchaser needs to have never previously owned a property anywhere in the world, and when a joint purchase both purchasers must be first time buyers to benefit from the changes.

If you would like any further information or to speak to someone about this change, please contact our new business team on nb@mjpconveyancing.com
